The power of choice (for you AND your customers) - Chanti Zak - Copywriter & Funnel Strategist

Estimated read time: 5 mins

I was a nightmare of a teenager.

Constantly staying out past curfew, skipping school, stealing from the liquor cabinet — I was basically Maeby from Arrested Development (minus the cousin kissing).

I also *cringe* liked to slam my door when I was pissed off.

When I was 15, my parents decided they’d teach me a lesson and THEY TOOK MY BEDROOM DOOR!

I could deal with being grounded or getting my Discman taken away, but my door?! Nuh uh. Not cool.

A decade later, my hubs decided to reno the bathroom while I was away for a few weeks visiting the door stealers.

His bold promise that all would be shiny and finito upon our return was wishful thinking at its finest.

When I walked in the house, I was instantly brought back to a place of pure teen angst…

The door to my bathroom was gone

You would freak out too, right?! Please tell me I’m not alone in my basic desire for doors.

Sliding door.

All of this got me thinking about what those doors represented

Privacy, security, protection, boundaries, but most importantly, choice.

The choice to transition from open to closed. In or out. Yes or no.

Without the doors, my ability to choose disappeared.

In this week’s Spill the Tea we’re exploring the proverbial doors that you might unknowingly be taking off the hinges.

The doors you keep closed because you believe them to be locked.

The open doors you forgot you had the option to close.

Come on in…

What you’ll learn in this article:

🍵💲The proverbial doors in your business that you might unknowingly be taking off the hinges.

🍵💲The doors you keep closed because you believe them to be locked & the open doors you forgot you had the option to close.

🍵💲An invitation to make a choice that could open doors you didn’t even know exist.

The tea: “you ALWAYS have a choice”

You might be wondering what all of this talk of doors has to do with your business.

The seed I want to plant in your noggin’ with my door drama is one that could help you grow a far more loyal following, increase your sales, and build trust.

It’s the importance of giving your audience, clients, and customers, the power to choose.

People hate feeling like they don’t have a door to open or close.

In practical terms, it means…

🚪 giving your subscribers the option to opt out of a promo campaign.

🚪It means giving them a get out of jail free card in the form of a badass guarantee on your programs.

🚪 It means listening to what they really need and then creating options around those needs so THEY have a choice.

But before you can do any of that (especially that last one) you have to examine the doors of your own perception.

The ones you keep closed because once upon a time you were led to believe they were locked.

You might think you have no choice but to continue doing things the way you’ve been doing them.

Enter the most annoying but true sentence uttered at least 17,009 times per day in therapy offices around the world:

You always have a choice.

So where does it feel like you don’t?

CLOSE THOSE DOORS.

A few examples…

Door #1: You’re on calls all the time. You’re Zoomed out. But it feels like it’s part of the job description. No amount of cute backgrounds or blue blockers is going to rescue you. This is a door you have to close.

Possible solutions: you transition to voice coaching using a tool like Voxer with your clients. You only take calls one day a week. You take the “could this meeting be an email” concept more seriously and get hella specific around what calls are actually necessary vs. “nice to have”

Door #2: Your business only runs when you do. This whole trading time for money thing is getting old. You know there are other ways but you’re not sure where to start or if they’re truly feasible. Shut the front door, %FIRSTNAME%!

Possible solutions: You learn how to deliver results at scale — in a way that doesn’t sacrifice your standards. You get your bootie signed up for Course Confident and start making strides toward building an asset that will allow you to step away from your laptop and live your life while still bringing home the bacon.

Door #3: You closed door #2 (yay, you!) and you still want more free time to just exist, be with your kids, learn pottery, or whatever else your heart desires. This feels like a closed door because how will you ever get everything done if you take an extra day off per week?!

Possible solutions: You audit your time and look at what you’re spending it on that matters, and what doesn’t (there WILL be ample examples in the latter category, promise). You get extra help with the things you don’t want or need to be doing in the first place.

All of this to say, embrace the cliche — when one door closes, another opens.

Give yourself and your audience the gift of CHOICE.

Sip on this…
