The psychology of buying cycles: How long it really takes to make a sale - Chanti Zak - Copywriter & Funnel Strategist

Estimated read time: 3 mins

Hey hey, friend! 👋

Did you know it takes about 200 hours of meaningful interaction to become close with someone?

According to a 2018 study by psychologist Jeffrey Hall it takes:

~50 hours to go from acquaintance to casual friend

~90 hours to become a real friend

~200+ hours to reach close friend status

If it takes that long to build true connection in “real” life…

Why do we expect someone to trust us after one post?

Why do we panic when they don’t buy after reading 3 emails?

People aren’t ignoring you.

They’re just not there yet.

Buying cycles, like most things — relationships, hormones, creative energy — move in phases.

“Why haven’t they bought?”

Maybe the real question should be:

â€œAm I creating enough meaningful interaction that they will when they’re ready?”

We know trust is earned.
We know connection takes time.
But when it comes to business, we forget.

We think the offer is off. Or the algorithm is broken. Or maybe we’re the problem.

But the truth is often simpler: most people just aren’t ready — yet.

🍵💲Why your people aren’t buying yet (and why that’s normal)

🍵💲How to shorten the sales cycle without forcing it

🍵💲What you can do to support every stage of the buyer cycle

This week’s tea: Most people aren’t ghosting you — they’re just mid-cycle

We all move through different phases as buyers:

→ Curiosity
→ Research
→ Quiet watching
→ Consideration
→ Decision

Sometimes people fly through that in a week.
Other times… it takes years.

Real talk? I followed my current coach for 4 YEARS before hiring her.
I wasn’t on her list. I never commented on her posts.
I just quietly appreciated her presence — until one day, the time was right.

That’s how most people buy. Silently. Slowly. Then suddenly.

So if you’ve been showing up and not seeing the results you expected — don’t take it as a sign to shrink.

Take it as a sign to keep going. But with intention.

Here’s how to stay relevant (and sane) in the process ⬇️

ZOOM OUT… like way out.

Stop measuring ROI based on one launch cycle. There are a few amazing business owners I’m coaching right now who are in the midst of launching the first ever iteration of their offers.

Creating AND launching is a BIG endeavor. It’s common in this season for the launch to feel less than thrilling, especially when you’re holding the bulk of the delivery and marketing tasks alone.

You MUST as a creator, especially a first time one, look at the bigger arc, look to the next launch, and by all means don’t give up just because the first didn’t result in financial fireworks. Strategic marketing isn’t about instant results — it’s about building systems that compound. Most people stop way too soon.

Create Easy Yes entry points

Not everyone is ready for your flagship high-ticket offer. Give people ways to start small:

Easy Yes offers are my favorite for this and how I solved a huge problem in my own business when my lowest price point offer was $2k.

An Easy Yes offer is typically under $100 and very strategically aligned with a burning problem your people have.

Don’t mistake silence for disinterest

Someone might be in your orbit for years before they raise their hand.

But when you show up consistently, when you focus on service over pressure, when you honor the cycle instead of rushing it?

That’s when magic happens.

🧋True for me, HBU?

Remember, when someone finally buys, it’s almost never about that moment.

It’s almost always about everything you showed them before that moment.

Keep showing up!
