You (human) have a memory problem - Chanti Zak - Copywriter & Funnel Strategist

Estimated read time: 4 mins

This will be my last Spill the Tea for a minute while I work on brewing up something equally (if not more 😉) hot and sweet.

I’ve had a lot of big realizations over the last few months and what’s coming next feels like a totally new direction in a lot of ways.

I’m excited to share it with you. But in the spirit of spillin’ the tea and getting right real about the BTS I devote this issue to something else that might feel a lil outta left field:

MEMORY.

Humans are incredibly forgetful creatures by design. In some ways it serves us, but rarely in our businesses.

What if you didn’t have a clarity problem, but a memory one?

What you’ll learn in this article:

🍵💲Why memory might be your real clarity problem (and how to fix it)

🍵💲5 things worth reminding yourself of on the regular if you want to stay anchored in your vision

🍵💲The “Upward Spiral” cheatsheet prompt you can steal to turn doubtful days around fast

The tea: we’re all forgetful about the things that matter most

I spiralled yesterday. I forgot why I was doing what I was doing.

How dumb does that sound?

But it happens all the time. You walk into a room or open your phone and sit there in a daze, “what am I here for again?”

I often think of our terrible memory as an act of divine grace.

After all, it’s what eventually softens all grief. It’s what allows us to birth more than one child.

It’s an evolutionary mechanism that keeps us *mostly* anchored in the present or focused on the future.

I would say one of the #1 challenges I hear from my clients and community is a perceived lack of clarity.

The trouble is, most people have no systems for capturing their clarity in the moment.

If you need 7 different reminders in your calendar to take your fish oil, damn rights you’re gonna need just as many if not more to remind you:

  • Why you made a certain decision (+ why it’s worth sticking to)
  • The best case scenario, what’s possible, what you’re working toward
  • The worst case scenario, and how it still sets you up to at least learn
  • Truth anchors. Statements and beliefs that have landed for you and felt meaningful and helpful at some point. Don’t expect your brain to remember this shiz.
  • What to do when doubt creeps in or you have an off day

We think we’ll remember the important things, but our brains are actually so busy keeping us alive.

Most people spend most of their time in a beta brain wave state.

But it’s an alpha wave state that allows us to think about the bigger picture and turn down the self-doubt dial.

Meditate and move your body and do the things that shift you into alpha more often BUT ALSO, remind your beta loving brain of what matters when you need it most.

Here’s a prompt you can plug into your 2nd brain tool of choice to help you create a cheatsheet of sorts:

I want you to help me create a “Why I’m Doing This” reminder cheat sheet so I can stay anchored in my vision during this next big move in my business.

Here’s what you need to know about my situation:

1. My big vision:

2. My identity shift:

3. My best case scenario:

4. My worst case scenario:

5. What I’d still gain:

6. The risk of doing nothing:

7. My tone preference:

Using my answers, write me a one-page “Why I’m Doing This” sheet that’s bold, emotionally charged, and keeps me moving forward — even when I feel wobbly.

Include a short, powerful Power Statement at the end that captures the essence of why I’m all-in on this.

Print it off and keep that gold in your field of vision.

I call mine the Upward Spiral cheatsheet because it legit turns my dark and doubtful moments around when I could easily spiral in the wrong direction.
